JoyOS Lab · Annual AI Budget · Investor Review

AI costs under $1.25 per member per year.

A first-principles analysis of Anthropic API costs across three growth scenarios, prepared for investor review. At any realistic membership tier, the AI cost per member per year stays below $1.25. This is a structural advantage, not a line-item risk.

01 — Unit Economics

0.4% of revenue at any realistic tier.

The AI cost per active member sits at roughly $0.10 per month and compresses as the community grows. This is the opposite of a scaling risk.
At the Activator tier — the most popular — AI represents less than half a percent of monthly revenue. The gross margin floor on the AI line item alone is above 99%.
Cost per member $0.10/month Annual per member ~$1.20/year Primary model Claude Haiku 4.5 Opus in production None

AI cost as a share of subscription revenue

Joy Seeker · $5.97/month
AI cost: $0.10/month. This equals 1.7% of revenue at the entry tier — where the ratio looks largest. Even here, 98 cents of every dollar stays in the business.
Joy Activator · $24.75/month equiv
AI cost: $0.10/month. Equals 0.4% of revenue at the most popular tier. Well under half a percent of a member's annual fee.
Joy Catalyst · $49.75/month equiv
AI cost: $0.10/month. Equals 0.2% of revenue at the top tier. The AI line item is effectively invisible at this level.

Cost per member compresses as the community grows

Admin overhead runs at roughly $1.07/month regardless of member count. At small scale this is a larger share of the per-member number. As active membership grows, that fixed overhead amortizes across more members and the average per-member cost falls toward the Haiku floor.

Stage Monthly active members AI cost / member / month AI cost / member / year
Early stage (today) 10 $0.21 $2.52
Low scenario (month 12) 33 $0.12 $1.44
Expected scenario (month 12) 98 $0.10 $1.20
High scenario (month 12) 260 $0.10 $1.20
02 — Annual Budget

Recommended annual spend: $250.

The high-growth scenario costs $175 raw for the year. At $250, the recommended line item adds a 40% safety buffer and covers a strong launch year without constraint.
Low · 50 Members by Month 12
$55/yr
$39 raw · 40% buffer applied
Expected · 150 Members by Month 12
$120/yr
$84 raw · most likely scenario
High · 400 Members by Month 12
$250/yr
$175 raw · recommended budget line

All three scenarios assume word-of-mouth growth only, no paid acquisition, and a 65% active member engagement rate. Admin AI overhead is fixed at roughly $1.07/month regardless of member count. The $250 recommendation covers the high-growth year with $75 to spare.

Immediate Action: Load Credit Now
The admin "credit too low" block is active, preventing Kristin from using the platform she built. Loading $25 clears operations and covers several months at current usage. A $50 top-up provides a 3 to 4 month comfortable buffer, with usage alerts set at $40 remaining.
03 — Growth Scenarios

Three scenarios. All under $30 per month.

Monthly AI costs stay in single digits through the expected path and peak below $28 in month 12 of the high-growth scenario. No scenario approaches a material budget line.

Growth assumes a high-touch wellbeing community built on word-of-mouth and Kristin's existing audience. No paid acquisition is included. The 65% active member ratio is conservative for a coaching-style community where members have made a deliberate financial commitment.

Scenario A · Low — 50 Paid Members by Month 12
$39/year raw · $55 recommended
  • Average active members per month: 22
  • Peak monthly cost (month 12): $4.17
  • Member AI cost component for the year: ~$26
  • Admin overhead for the year: $13 (fixed, 2 admins)
Scenario B · Expected — 150 Paid Members by Month 12
$84/year raw · $120 recommended
  • Average active members per month: 62
  • Peak monthly cost (month 12): $10.97
  • Member AI cost component for the year: ~$71
  • Admin overhead for the year: $13 (fixed, 2 admins)
Scenario C · High — 400 Paid Members by Month 12
$175/year raw · $250 recommended
  • Average active members per month: 167
  • Peak monthly cost (month 12): $27.77
  • Member AI cost component for the year: ~$162
  • Admin overhead for the year: $13 (fixed, 2 admins)
04 — The Investor Case

Less than a greeting card. Per member. Per year.

The AI cost story is one of JoyOS Lab's structural advantages: a personalized, high-touch experience delivered at near-zero marginal cost per member.
"We deliver a personalized AI-guided wellbeing experience for under $1.25 per member per year — less than the cost of a greeting card — leaving 99%+ gross margin room for the AI line item at any realistic subscription tier."

Every member-facing feature runs on Claude Haiku 4.5, the most capable model at the lowest cost tier. All high-volume paths use Haiku. Sonnet is reserved for marketplace listing copy, where output quality justifies the cost. No Opus is deployed in production. The cost structure reflects deliberate choices made at every build decision point.

05 — Cost-Control Levers

Three paths to compress costs further.

The scenario numbers above use baseline pricing. Three levers apply as volume grows, reducing costs without any visible change to the member experience.
Prompt Caching · Highest Impact
System prompts for gratitude reflections, discovery conversations, and coaching calls are identical across invocations. With a 5-minute cache window, subsequent calls pay $0.10/M instead of $1.00/M on input tokens. At 10 calls per member per day, most system-prompt tokens are served from cache. Estimated reduction: 40 to 55% of per-call input cost. Applying this to the expected scenario brings the annual cost from ~$84 down to roughly $55.
Batch API · Modest Saving
Gratitude nudges and hashtag generation are non-real-time tasks. Routing them through the Batch API halves their cost. These are two of the lowest-cost features individually, so the net impact on the total bill is modest. Estimated reduction: ~5% of total annual cost.
Sonnet Scope Review · Future Lever
Marketplace listing drafts and refinement use Sonnet today, where copy quality directly affects seller conversion. If marketplace volume grows to 100 or more listings per month, a well-tuned Haiku prompt may close the quality gap. Worth revisiting at scale; not a cost driver at current volumes.
With prompt caching applied, the expected scenario drops from $84 to roughly $55 per year — before any other optimization.
